Every enduring ritual is experienced differently in each generation, or even in the course of a single life. When I was younger, I approached Passover in a simple celebratory spirit, as the movement from oppression to freedom. Now I understand the moment of liberation as the beginning of an arduous journey that could have ended poorly and—absent a series of divine interventions—surely would have. There are lessons for today’s political revolutionaries.
